Barry White Tribute
Top 40 Oldies
JD has been singing and performing since he was 12 years old performing with artists such as Jackie Wilson, Mary Wells, Teena Marie, The Emotions and Evelyn Champagne King. Known for his 1980's disco hits “#1 Lover” and “Wonder Woman”, JD continues to perform these songs for thousands of loyal fans throughout California and Mexico.
JD loves singing R&B but has recorded songs in many genres including R&B, Blues, Disco, Rock and Pop. HE is known for his baritone voice, but even more for his ability to entertain.
After hearing over and over again how much his voice sounds like Barry White, and seeing so many
tribute acts forming, 2015 JD decided to put a band together and pay tribute to Barry White. However, it was not long before he decided to put together a full orchestra also. So, JD put together a 27 piece symphony orchestra staffed with world renowned musicians. They have been selling out concerts at venues such as The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, The Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, The Rose in Pasadena, The Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, The Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, and 20,000 screaming fans at East Los Angeles Civic Center and more.
Realizing that not many budgets and small stages and restaurants can hold an orchestra, JD has been focused on building and tightening up his band which consist of 7 musicians and 3 background singers. It was no surprise that with the 3 masterful keyboard players in the band, they sound as good as a full orchestra.
JD has recently recorded and released several new songs; both originals and covers and is looking forward to including them in future concerts.
My Videos
Over the past 12 years, JD has performed Barry White's songs with his 18 - 27 piece orchestra throughout California before thousands of fans. Long story short as to why you will not see any of those live video performances:
I was served with a lawsuit with the intention of preventing me from singing and performing Barry White's music. The claim was that I was infringing on Barry White's music by creating "derivative arrangements and orchestrations."
Definition of derivative arrangements "A derivative work" is any song that takes a preexisting work and uses that material to create a new composition or sound recording. It differs from a cover song, which is a more straightforward interpretation of an existing composition without significant alterations to the melody or lyrics." Note that the music that we created and performed was an exact duplication of Barry White's original music and was performed just as Barry White sung it. So their claim of derivative music was false.
It was clearly their expectation that a lawsuit represented by powerful entertainment attorneys would scare me off and I would not fight back. To their surprise, I did fight back, being represented by my wife who was also named in the lawsuit.
We made it known to them that we are aware that they could not prevent us from performing with our band as a cover band and that the lawsuit does not cover our use of our band. In my opinion, having to have some kind of win and justify the thousands of dollars spent on legal fees, they then began trying to get us to settle the case by me agreeing to perform without using my orchestra and a few other petty things. This was actually fine with us because prior to the lawsuit, we were already realizing that many venues do not have the space or budget to book an act with a full orchestra. I had already replaced my string players with keyboard players which sounds as good if not better than our orchestra.
The reason our many live in concert video's are not available is because legally there is a required license to post video's of cover songs which we do not have, and they refuse to approve. However, I am licensed to record and sell my recordings of Barry White's music which does not require their approval.
Although not required, it was stipulated in settled lawsuit we can perform my Barry White Tribute with my band.
Many will ask, there are many Barry White Tribute acts, why was I singled out? It is my opinion that it was retaliation of our very close friendship to Barry White's daughter who filed a lawsuit against the estate. (This is public record).
